Earth Bistro Cafe - Cleveland, Ohio

Aside from those who attended a private event a few days before the official opening, my friend Rachel and I were the very first customers ever at Earth Bistro Cafe (Clifton Blvd, Cleveland, Ohio). Rachel had read about their opening in a Facebook group for Cleveland vegetarians and vegans, we were waiting in the car when they opened their doors.

Even if you're not a vegetarian, you should read on (public health concerns).

Despite billing themselves (including on their awning) as being very vegan friendly, the only menu items that were truly vegan were a few appetizers (guacamole and hummus), and one salad out of three. The waitress assured us that many of the offerings could be prepared as vegan dishes, however, after further questioning it seemed their idea of making something vegan was in many cases to just leave the meat/dairy out, which included the tostadas we ordered (they were intended to have a creamy lime sauce, nothing took its place). We were told they did have vegan cheese, but there weren't always (ever?) substitutes for the proteins. Nowhere on the menu was there any mention of what was available, be it tofu, seitan, tempeh, TVP or so on. Most of the menu was meat, don't feel like you're supporting the cause by spending your dollars here.

The avocados on the tostadas (clearly store bought tortillas) were well on their way to being brown.

One of Rachel's bell peppers still had the sticker with the barcode on it (I can't imagine how it could have been washed without that being noticed).

Freshness and cleanliness aside, the food didn't even taste particularly good. Off the top of my head there are at least a dozen Mexican/Caribbean/Latin restaurants that I would choose ahead of it on the west side of Cleveland/Lakewood alone. I think Rachel's list might be even longer.

You'd think that a restaurant called Earth Bistro Cafe wouldn't use styrofoam takeout containers, but you'd be wrong.

The experience on its own wouldn't justify creating a new blog, but this is why I decided to: I posted the above review on Yelp, and within a couple of days there were 4 five-star reviews of Earth Bistro posted by brand new users with no other posts (later one account was used to slander a local juice bar with a Latin menu), no friends, no pictures, most of which were filled with grammatical errors (three of those posts have since been removed)…my review got flagged. Very petty.
